Supplements For Better Hearing

Hearing loss may occur for many reasons.

Hearing loss may occur for a variety of reasons; it may be caused by chronic and loud noises, disease or it may be age related. To treat these conditions, certain dietary supplements are recommended for better hearing.

Causes of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss may be due to tinnitus (a ringing in the ears), Meniere's disease or as a common condition affecting older adults. According to Dr. Maoshing Ni, in his book, "Secrets of Longevity," as we age, blood supply to the auditory nerve diminishes.

Supplements for Tinnitus

In his book, "Balanced Healing," Dr. Larry Altshuler recommends a balanced healing plan to treat tinnitus. Supplements included in the plan are vitamin B-12 and vitamin A; also in supplement form, he recommends gingko biloba and feverfew.

Supplements for Meniere's Disease

For Meniere's disease, Dr. Altshuler recommends a balanced healing plan that includes vitamins B-1, B-2, B-6, vitamin C and zinc. He also recommends, in supplement form, several appropriate Chinese herbal remedies.

Supplements for Aging

Dr. Ni recommends niacin (B-3) to help dilate capillaries, which promote blood flow to the inner ear. He also recommends another B vitamin, choline, as it is essential in producing a key neurotransmitter known as acetylcholine.

Warning About Supplements

All vitamins, minerals and herbs are considered dietary supplements by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Supplements are not subjected to the same quality controls as drugs.
