When thyroid disease occurs, the body produces too little of the hormones necessary for controlling metabolism. Both hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) are very common and under diagnosed. Women are more at risk. Thyroid disease can present with either minor or severe symptoms.
Emotional Symptoms
Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are associated with noticeable emotional effects. An overactive thyroid may cause anxiety, while an underactive thyroid will often lead to depression.
Weight Symptoms
Hyperthyroidism is often associated with excessive or unintentional weight loss. Hypothyroidism is a very common cause of obesity or unexplained weight gained.
Sleep Symptoms
Chronic fatigue syndrome and drowsiness are sometimes caused by hypothyroidism, but hyperthyroidism often leads to insomnia or frequent night-waking.
Bowel Symptoms
Because of slowed metabolism, an underactive thyroid may lead to chronic or severe constipation. Frequent or loose bowel movements may be caused by an overactive thyroid.
Physical Symptoms
Swelling of the neck, skin problems, impotence, hair loss, temperature sensitivity and joint problems are often associated with thyroid disease.
