Home Remedy For A Toothache

Toothaches can result from tooth decay, infection in the gums or a cracked tooth. Using simple home remedies can be effective and inexpensive. If you do not see improvement within 7 to 10 days, see your dentist.

Clove oil, garlic, salt, German chamomile, goldenseal and tea tree essential oil are just some of the ingredients used in home remedies for toothache.

Identification

For a toothache, gargle with salt water by combining 8 ounces of water with a reasonable amount of salt. Gargle with it and rub clove and tea tree oil on the affected area for relief.

Peel a small garlic piece and place it between the tooth and mouth to help reduce pain. Garlic has antibacterial properties.

Types

Dr. Victor Zeines recommends combining 2 drops of German chamomile essential oil, a drop of clove bud essential oil and ½ teaspoon of goldenseal powder. Dab this mixture on your teeth and gums up to 4 times a day.

The most simple home remedy for a toothache is to combine 12 drops of tea tree oil and 10 drops of clove bud oil in a glass with 2 ounces of water. Rinse daily three time a day.

Discontinue use once your toothache is gone.

Benefits

Place a sliver of garlic in your mouth alongside the tooth that is painful. Remove and replace daily and do not sleep with it in your mouth.

Licorice has glycyrrhizin to help prevent plaque and help fight the formation of Streptococcus mutans, the kind of bacteria that can lead to tooth decay. Licorice is often found in many herbal remedies for toothache that can be purchased at health food stores. Follow the directions on each product as the combination of ingredients will vary.

As with any medical condition, discontinue use after your toothache has subsided.

Considerations

If you have any bleeding or a history of tooth decay, see your dentist right away.

People who have mercury amalgams ("silver fillings") may also experience toothache and can consult a holistic dentist to determine if their tooth pain is related to the mercury vapors released by their fillings.

Today, there are mercury-free options such as ceramic veneers.

Warning

Do not skip regular dental hygiene. Brush and floss after every meal and rinse with plain salt water or a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water.

Rinsing with mouthwash after meals is not a good substitute for brushing the teeth.

Periodontal disease puts people at risk as any infection in the mouth can place bacteria into the bloodstream that can then be carried to the heart. See a dentist regularly.
