A racing heart can be an anxiety-ridden experience. However, there are a few ways to stop a racing heart, including physical maneuvers and motions that are useful in regulating heart rhythm.
Stay Calm
Keep stress to a minimum. Clear your mind. Try not to focus on the fact that your heart is racing because it will only make your heart race faster. Take slow, deep breaths and attempt to relax physically and mentally.
Diet
If you're prone to a racing heart, follow a diet that is low in saturated fats and cholesterol. Diet plays a large role in how the heart beats and fatty foods can constrict the arteries-- making it harder for the heart to beat and causing it to race.
Hydration
Stay hydrated by drinking enough water throughout the day. Being properly hydrated helps the heart pump blood and oxygen more effectively because the cells are saturated and can help reduce incidences of a racing heart.
Medication
There are medications available to treat a racing heart. These include beta blockers, calcium channel blockers and blood pressure medication. The drugs typically lighten the workload of the heart and can prevent a racing heart from occurring, or at least decrease the severity of each episode.
Sleep
The average amount of required sleep for each individual varies, but it ranges from about seven to nine hours per night. Less sleep can mean more occurrences of a racing heart because the heart and body are fatigued and are working harder to function.
