Chinese Herbs For Lower Leg Circulation

Peripheral artery disease is a circulatory condition that diminishes blood flow to the limbs. This disorder is characterized by decreased circulation in the legs, hip discomfort, leg cramps and pain when climbing stairs or after walking. The condition is caused by fat buildup in the arteries, atherosclerosis or the formation of blood clots in your legs. While your condition should be monitored by a doctor, traditional Chinese medicine uses herbs that can improve lower leg circulation. Dong Quai


Dong quai helps improve circulatory processes and is also used in treating ovarian cancer and other conditions involving the female reproductive organs. Some doctors also prescribe it to fend off anemia, exhaustion and hypertension. Dong quai encourages red blood cell production, which helps to oxygenate cells, and is also believed to be beneficial to the endocrine system. Consume dong quai by taking two 550-mg capsules two times a day with a glass or water or with a meal. Note: Dong quai can cause gastrointestinal upset in some individuals, and it can cause sun sensitivity in fair-skinned people.


Chuan Xiong Rhizome








Chuan xiong rhizome (or ligusticum) helps encourage healthy circulation and is also used for the treatment of abdominal pain and for menstrual irregularities in women. Make a decoction of chuan xiong by boiling 3 to 10 grams of the dried root in 20 ml of water for 15 minutes. Strain it. Consume one cup a day to alleviate circulatory difficulties. Note: This herb should not be taken by females with a heavy menstrual flow.


Chinese Angelica Root


Chinese angelica root is used to improve circulation as well as to alleviate pain and soften stools. Boil 5 to 10 grams of the dried root in 20 ml of water for 15 minutes. Strain to remove floating debris. Consume one cup once a day to improve circulatory processes. Note: If you begin to experience diarrhea, stop consuming this herb and contact a medical professional for further recommendations.


Corydalis Tuber


Corydalis tuber, from the Zhejiang province, is also used as a pain remedy. Boil 5 to 10 grams of the herb in 20 ml of water for 15 minutes. Strain the mixture. Drink one cup a day to alleviate lower leg circulatory complications. Note: This herb should not be consumed by pregnant or nursing females, and excessive amounts of Corydalis can cause fatigue, vertigo and nausea.


Dang Shen


Dang shen is a sweet herb that encourages healthy circulation and is used by Chinese physicians for its pain relieving properties, too. Boil 6 to 12 grams of the root in 20 ml of water for 15 minutes. Strain the mixture and consume one cup per day.
