Michigan requires a license for all chiropractors.
Chiropractors provide therapeutic services for patients with spinal and nerve injuries. They must receive extensive classroom and clinical training to learn chiropractic skills. Michigan requires a license to ensure that all chiropractors in the state have the knowledge and skills to effectively treat patients. The state has a rigorous set of requirements to qualify for a license. Aspiring chiropractors must commit substantial time and effort to get a Michigan license. They can then launch a career in the lucrative chiropractic field.
Instructions
1. Graduate from an approved chiropractor school. The Council on Chiropractic Education accredits chiropractor doctorate programs. Check out individual schools on its list for enrollment requirements. Always call the Michigan Board of Chiropractic before enrolling in a chiropractic program to ensure that it has board approval. You can call the MBC at 517-335-0918.
2. Submit fingerprints for a criminal background check. Fill out the "Livescan Fingerprint Request Form" in the MBC license application packet. L-1 Identity Solutions processes fingerprints for this requirement. Make an appointment online or by phone. Take the request form, the fee and a picture ID to the appointment. Applicants outside Michigan must obtain a fingerprint card and get fingerprinted at a local police agency. Send in the fingerprint card along with the "Livescan Fingerprint Request Form" and fee. You must also take Part IV if you are applying for your first license after Jan. 1, 2007, or if you have had an out-of-state license for less than five years. The NBCE does not always keep a current exam application available. Apply online or check for the next available application release date at the NBCE online application page (see Resources). You may use this form to apply for a Michigan chiropractor license if you either do not have a current license (license by examination), or if you currently have an out-of-state license for at least five years (license by endorsement). You must also fill out the "Certification for Licensure by Endorsement" if applying by endorsement. Send it to the board that issued your current license. That board will send the completed form to the MBC. Send the application form and fee to the following address:
Michigan Department of Community Health

5. Fill out the "Verification of Licensure or Registration in Another State" form for each state in which you have or have ever held a license. Contact that state's board for any applicable fees. The state boards send the completed verification directly to MBC.
6. Have your chiropractic school send verified transcripts to MBC. The transcript must show the degree conferred and the date. Have NBCE send a transcript of your examination scores to MBC (see contact information above).
