Proper Tooth Brushing

Oral hygiene is an important aspect of a person's overall health. It is not enough just to brush one's teeth once or twice a day, you should know the appropriate way to brush your teeth in order to best prevent plaque, cavities and gum disease. You may be able to save yourself from a lot of less than comfortable procedures such as fillings, root canals and pulled teeth, by simply applying good practices from the get go.

Soft Bristled Brush

You will want to use a soft bristled tooth brush when you brush your teeth. If the bristles are too tough, they can irritate or even cause your gums to bleed. Additionally, you will want to replace your brush each time the bristles become frayed to make sure you are getting optimal use out of the brush.

Toothpaste

Place a kidney bean sized amount of tooth paste on your brush when you are ready to brush your teeth.

The Process

Place the tooth brush against your top front two teeth and start moving it around in a circular motion to polish your teeth. Continue this process with every two sets of teeth working your way to the back top right side of your mouth and then the back top left side of your mouth. Next, place the toothbrush on your middle bottom teeth and once again rotate your brush in a circular motion to polish your teeth. Continue this tooth polishing process with the teeth on the bottom right side of your mouth by moving the brush toward the back of your mouth as you rotate it against your teeth in a circular motion. Repeat this process with your bottom left set of teeth. Next, move the tooth brush to the back of your top set of teeth. Move the brush in a circular motion along the teeth, starting in the center and then working your brush to the left and right sides until all the teeth have been polished. Finish brushing your teeth by placing the toothbrush behind your bottom center teeth. Move the brush in a circular motion going toward the back right side of your mouth and then the back left side of your mouth.

Frequency

It is a good idea to brush your teeth after meals, after you wake up in the morning and before you go to bed at night.
