Cope With The Stages Of Aging







With the celebration of every birthday comes the inescapable fact that our bodies are 1 year older. At some point, everyone starts to slow down. Aging is just one of life's natural stages; by being as active as you can in your later years, you can live life to the fullest.


Instructions








1. Arrange to get out of the house as much as possible to keep your spirits up. Schedule as many activities as time and mobility allow.


2. Engage in a fitness routine. This doesn't mean you have to take an aerobics class or start jogging; it does mean staying physically mobile. Schedule a daily walk and stretch your muscles to keep them flexible. Talk with your physician about exercises that target specific portions of your body that need therapy.


3. Alter your diet to reflect your body's changing nutritional needs. Reduce your caloric intake when you're no longer active enough to keep your weight at a reasonable level. Include a wide variety of nutritious foods that supply plenty of calcium, iron, protein and fiber.


4. Visit the dentist to ensure your natural teeth or dentures fit securely so you can enjoy a variety of foods. Grind or chop foods into small pieces if chewing is difficult.


5. Fight osteoporosis by supplementing calcium in your diet. If you're female, ask your physician about an estrogen replacement routine and increase your intake of dairy products to prevent bone problems.


6. Consult an ophthalmologist about vision problems that occur with the aging process. Some conditions, such as macular degeneration, improve if you take vitamins and supplements; others may require surgery.


7. Socialize with friends in the same age range to foster ongoing relationships. Elderly people may get depressed if they're surrounded by only younger individuals. By associating with your peers, you can feel accepted and valuable.
