Discuss Hysterectomy With a Spouse
A hysterectomy is a procedure that removes a woman's uterus. If you or your spouse is going to have a hysterectomy, it's important that you discuss the surgery and consider how it will affect your relationship.
Instructions
1. Attend physician visits and check ups as a couple so both spouses can ask questions and get information about the surgery from the doctor.
2. Talk about the complications associated with hysterectomies. Discuss these with your spouse so both of you are aware of them. There is a risk of infection following the surgery. Many women experience urinary tract complications, kidney infections or bladder infections.
3. Discuss the possible emotional effects of a hysterectomy. Many women experience some feelings of depression for a short period following the surgery. By talking about such a possibility before the procedure, both spouses can prepare for any effects.
4. Talk about the effects the surgery will have on your sex life. Recognize that you won't be able to have sex after the hysterectomy until your physician approves it; most couples have to wait 4 to 6 weeks. Some women are hesitant to have sex after a hysterectomy or may need more time before they're ready. Couples should discuss these possibilities and agree to support one another.
5. Support one another. If you're having the hysterectomy, let your spouse know how much you need his support. Give him examples of how he can be there for you throughout the experience. If your spouse is having the hysterectomy, listen carefully to her fears and let her know you're there to help. Be patient and kind as you help your spouse prepare for the hysterectomy.
