Concerta Side Effects In Adults

Concerta, or methylphenidate, is most often prescribed to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in both children and adults. The drug is available only in long-acting sustained-release form. This allows the patient to take one pill that releases small dosages over time, resulting in up to 12 hours of symptom relief.

Common Side Effects

Common side effects in adults taking Concerta are drowsiness, lightheadedness, trouble sleeping, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, appetite loss, irritability, nervousness, headache, constipation and dry mouth.

Less Common Side Effects

Unlikely side effects are serious: weight loss, irregular heartbeat, mood changes, behavior changes, uncontrolled movements, verbal tics and difficulty urinating.

Rare Side Effects

Fainting, seizures, slurred speech, confusion, shortness of breath, vision changes, pain in the chest, jaw or left arm, and weakness on one side of the body are rare but very serious side effects of Concerta.

Allergic Reactions

Allergic reactions are rare but serious. Symptoms include severe dizziness, rash, trouble breathing, and itching or swelling of the tongue, face or throat.

Misuse

Misusing the drug may result in serious, possibly fatal, heart and blood pressure problems. Psychosis or other serious mental changes may occur if the drug is misused or abused.
