Although men do not experience significant hormonal fluctuations like women do during pregnancy or menopause, it is possible for men to go through a period of time with less interest in sex (low libido). The causes of a low libido are different for each man, and the loss of interest in sex may last for just a short time or may become a chronic problem. Causes of low libido in men include illness and emotional stress.
Stress
Stress from problems at work, high self expectations or sudden or extreme financial difficulties may cause a man to have a short-term loss of libido.
Relationship Problems
Problems in a romantic relationship or marriage, such as frequent fighting or arguing, may cause a man to lose interest in sex.
Mental Disorders
Men who have clinical depression, generalized anxiety disorder or other stress or anxiety disorders may have a loss of libido.
Illness
A short-term illness, such as the flu or a recent medical procedure or surgery, may result in a low libido for some men.
Chronic Diseases
Men who have chronic health conditions such as heart disease, respiratory disorders or cancer may have a loss of libido and decreased sexual satisfaction.
Hormones
The amount of testosterone in a man's blood normally decreases with age, and the decrease in hormones can cause a gradual loss of libido over a period of decades.
