Facts Schizophrenia







Schizophrenia is a very serious condition that should not be ignored. When someone has it, it doesn't just affect them, but it also affects everyone in their lives as well. When schizophrenia is diagnosed, it cannot be completely cured, but it can be treated.


Significance


According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 1.1% of the U.S. population that is over 18 years old suffers from schizophrenia.


Features


Schizophrenia has some very specific features. People who have it are very paranoid of other people. They think they are plotting against them. They also hear voices that other people don't hear and they also think people broadcast out loud what they are thinking.


Cause


Schizophrenia is caused by two factors. One of them is a predisposition through certain genes, and it is also caused by environmental factors that someone ends up going through.


Symptoms








Men and women who have schizophrenia can show specific symptoms. Some of these include hallucinations, delusional thinking and impulsive behavior.


Treatment


The main type of treatment for schizophrenia is medication, but there are times where patients will not always adhere to it. Psychotherapy and support groups are added to the treatment plan.
