Reduce Under Eye Dark Circles

Creams containing vitamins C and K may help reduce under eye circles.

Dark circles under the eyes may be cute on raccoons, but they're not on humans. In addition to making you look older than you are, under eye circles can also result in an ill or tired appearance. However, a lack of sleep isn't always to blame. Stress, aging, sun exposure and pigment irregularities can all cause under eye circles. While they cannot be completely eliminated, there are a variety of options available to reduce the appearance of dark circles.

Instructions

1. Avoid sun exposure and get in the habit of applying sunscreen under your eyes anytime you go outside. Sun exposure produces more melanin in the skin, worsening the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. For added protection wear sunglasses and a hat.

2. Get plenty of sleep. Although insufficient sleep doesn't usually cause dark circles, a lack of sleep can make the skin appear paler, which emphasizes the dark circles that are already present.

3. Increase water intake to keep skin hydrated. Under eye circles can be a sign of dehydration, so make sure to drink water throughout the day.

4. Cover eyes with cucumber slices or cold tea bags to temporarily reduce blood vessel dilation. Dilated blood vessels can worsen the appearance of dark circles.

5. Apply a topical cream containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or vitamins K and C to the affected area. AHAs can thicken the skin, while vitamins K and C can temporarily add volume to the delicate under eye area.

6. Consult a dermatologist or plastic surgeon about professional treatments for dark circles like laser therapy or injected fillers. Lasers can treat irregular pigmentation and injected fillers can plump up eye hollows and cover up melanin, reducing the appearance of under eye circles.
