Chiropractors heal and promote health by returning vertebrae in the spine to proper positions. They also mobilize those vertebrae so that they move freely. When vertebrae are not aligned properly, they can put pressure on the nerves surrounding the spinal cord. Also, a healthy nervous system is linked to a healthy spinal column. Spinal manipulations, also called adjustments, are done to promote that health. There are specific positions used by chiropractors during treatment.
Supine
In the supine position, the patient lies down on her back with her face upward. The supine position is the most commonly used by chiropractors as it is easiest for neck manipulation. Much of the chiropractic adjustments happen by using the neck. Thus, it makes sense that this position is favored.
Side-Posture
The side-posture position, also known as the lateral position, is also commonly used. The patent lies on her side in a neutral position and at rest. This is a gentler position, as the adjustments do not involve any twisting or popping as they do in the supine position.
Prone
The prone position is a commonly used position during mid-back manipulation. It is also used by chiropractors when addressing issues with the lower cervical vertebrae. The activator and pro-adjuster methods use the prone position.
Knee-Posture
The knee-posture, also known as knee chest, is also used by chiropractors. The patient kneels on the floor. She leans forward and puts her head on a padded bench. During the actual adjustment, the patient turns her head to the side. Chiropractic techniques such as the Kale technique commonly use the knee-posture position.
