Treat A Herniated Or Bulging Cervical Disc (Nonsurgical Treatment)

A herniated or bulging cervical disc is not always painful for all but for some it is very painful. Here are a few tricks to relieve some pain associated with a herniated or bulging disc.

Instructions

1. Ice Treatment: Ice helps with inflammation. When the disc is inflamed it is pressing on nerves causing pain. Use ice packs for no more than 20 minutes a time. On for 20 minutes, off for one hour.

2. Heat Treatment: Heat treatment can be used a few days after ice for muscle tenderness that may be caused by pinched nerves. Do not use heat more than 1/2 an hour. Moist heat is better than dry heat.

3. Anti Inflammatory Medicines: Ibuprofen will be helpful to reduce inflammation but not always. Some patients need prescription strength anti inflamatories. Steroid treatments may also be prescribed.

4. Neck Brace: Wearing a neck brace will be helpful for pinched nerves cause by bulging or herniated discs. These braces can be found at your local pharmacy and online. Some neck braces come with an ice/heat pack which are very convienent.

5. Rest with Cervical Pillow. Getting plenty of rest will help as you reduce the pressure on the cervical disc. A cervical pillow will give significant relief from pain when laying down.

6. Rest with Aroma therapy Herbal Pillow: Small rectangular pillows placed under the neck only stuffed with lavender and other herbs may be helpful. These herbal pillows have been used as relaxants for many years. Some of these pillows are microwavable and are great for heat treatments.

7. Slow down. Anything that causes pressure on the disc is going to hurt and slow down your chances of healing. Jumping, running, dancing and many yoga positions should be avoided during the time of inflammation. Take it easy for the time being!

8. Chiropractic care: A chiropractor can help manipulate your spine to relieve some of the pressure. You may need many weeks of this type of therapy. Your chiropractor may also be able to help you with sore muscles.
