Homemade Neti Pots

blah

The Neti pot looks like a cross between a teapot and Aladdin's shoe. It is used to unclog nasal cavities when affected by a cold or sinus infection. Neti pots are originally made of ceramic and glass, but modern versions of these pots are now available in metal and plastic forms. You can buy these in pharmacies, but you can also make your own neti pot at home.

Instructions

1. Wash the bottle you are using with hot water and soap and let sit overnight. If you want to be sure that it is germ-free, pour boiling water in it and let stand for an hour. Do not neglect the top.

2. Bring to a boil 1 cup of water, ¼ of a cup of non-iodized salt and ¼ teaspoon of baking soda in a small saucepan. Stir while the mixture is heating up.

3. Leave the mixture covered overnight to cool down. Bring it to a boil again and allow it to come to room temperature. Pour the mixture into the squeeze bottle.

4. Tilt your head over the sink and insert the nozzle of the bottle into one nostril. Squeeze the liquid into one nostril. One cup of the liquid is sufficient for one nostril. Mix up a double batch if doing both sides.

5. Keep the liquid flowing into the nostril without hold the other side closed. When all the liquid has been used, gently blow your nose. Repeat on the other side.
