Dea Regulations For Ems Ambulances

The Drug Enforcement Agency issues registration numbers to entities that have authorization to distribute or prescribe medicine. EMS ambulance services must register with the DEA under the prescribing physician, nurse practitioner, or mid-level practitioner's state issued license or certification. The DEA requires EMS ambulances to keep accurate records and secure medication.


Drug Security


EMS ambulances have available numerous medications to treat a range of medical emergencies. Individual state law controls the types of medication that EMS ambulances may carry. The DEA requires EMS ambulances to store medication in a securely locked area that only certain people have access to within the vehicle.


Record Keeping


EMS ambulance workers must maintain accurate records of all medication used, purpose, and treatment. Additionally, the DEA requires records and inventories of all controlled substances to be kept in a separate location.


Enforcement








The Office of Diversion Control within the DEA investigates and enforces drug security and accurate record keeping. Diversion investigators work closely with dispensers of controlled substances and may issue citations for violations. Depending on the severity of the offence, the consequences of a DEA violation include fines, revocation of practitioner license/certification, or imprisonment.
