What Essential Oils Make Bees Leave The Home

You can keep your home free of bees naturally

Bees are one of the most annoying pests that can invade your home. Oftentimes they build their nests on decks, patios or other outdoor spaces near the house, threatening any peaceful relaxation you may have had in mind. For people with bee allergies, this threat is even more urgent. Although there are many chemical-based bee repellents, more natural solutions to the problem also exist. Several varieties of essential oils can be useful in warding off bees.

Orange Oil

Orange oil can be purchased at just about any health food store for less than $5. It is derived from the rind of oranges and can be very powerful. While many people like to keep this oil in their kitchen cabinet for flavoring foods, it can also be employed for repelling bees. Since the essential oil is highly concentrated, it should be diluted before use. Try mixing it with rubbing alcohol or water. This mixture can be applied directly to skin or "painted" all over your home and porch.

Almond Oil

Sweet, bitter and pure almond oils all act as a natural deterrent to bees. The active ingredient in almond oil, benzaldehyde, is known to repel many varieties of bees. In fact, many commercial bee repellents incorporate benzaldehyde to ward off bees, which are known to fiercely dislike the smell and avoid it at all costs. Many massage therapists use almond oil, so it should not be too difficult to find in large quantities. Try mixing it with other essential oils for a truly effective bee repellent.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil can be effective at combating bees on its own, but it works especially well when mixed with almond oil. Tea tree oil is one of the most readily available essential oils around because of its effectiveness in combating skin problems such as dryness, acne and sunburns. Check for tea tree oil in the beauty department of most major stores. In addition to warding off bees, tea tree oil is an excellent treatment for bee and wasp stings as well as bug bites. The solvent properties of tea tree oil make it an excellent insecticide, while the oil's hydrocarbons, called terpenes, are responsible for its abilities as an insect repellent. Tea tree oil is useful against many varieties of bugs in addition to bees.
