Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a neurological sleep disorder. It is characterized by either pain or an overwhelming need to move legs, primarily when trying to sleep. RLS sufferers often have impaired sleep, which then affects every other aspect of their lives, from other health issues to social interactions. Therefore, treatment is often sought. Thus far the primary course of therapy has been dopamine agonists like Mirapex or Requip, or some sort of sedative. However, there has been current evidence to suggest that iron infusion may be a viable and less side-effect-inducing option.
Significance
RLS has various causes. If it is caused by such things as diet and lifestyle issues such as smoking and use of alcohol, modifying that behavior will relieve the symptoms. For some, this will not work, as the cause appears to be genetic and possibly a genetic defect in the brain.
History
In post-mortem MRIs performed by James Connor, Ph.D., RLS sufferers were found to have low iron levels in the part of the brain where transportation of iron in and out of cells occurs. This suggests that it is a brain issue with iron that is the root cause of some RLS.
Identification
Individuals with RLS may have normal iron levels on the hematocrit. That is why it is important to check the ferretin levels, also. Ferretin levels will tell the practitioner what the iron store levels are.
Prevention/Solution
In a study done on RLS sufferers and reported in Sleep Medicine on-line, iron infusion of 1000 mg helped symptoms abate for approximately six months before they returned. It was found that ferritin levels decreased more rapidly than for non RLS individuals and thus they needed another infusion earlier than expected.
Considerations
It appears iron may be an important part of treatment for people with RLS. Increasing iron in diet and taking iron may be beneficial, though it seems the iron infusion may bypass the stomach and avoid malabsorption issues that come with over forms of iron.
Warning
As with any medical issue, check with your physician to confirm the diagnosis. Evaluate your lifestyle as some modifications may be all that is needed to alleviate symptoms.
