Pantoprazole Side Effects

Pantoprazole is a prescription medication used to aid acid reflux, gastroesophageal reflux disease and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a condition in which the stomach produces too much acid. It can also be used to treat ulcers in the stomach or intestines. Pantoprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor that blocks the production of acid in the stomach. When the amount of acid produced in the stomach is decreased, users will experience fewer symptoms of acid reflux and GERD, such as heartburn, a chronic cough and trouble sleeping.

Gastrointestinal Side Effects

Some people taking Pantoprazole will experience diarrhea, mild nausea and vomiting, and mild stomach pain as side effects of the medication. These effects are no sign of a problem and do not need to be reported to your doctor.

Neurological Side Effects

Headaches are a known side effect of Pantoprazole, but they are no cause for concern. However, unusual or explained fatigue and vision changes may indicate a problem and should be reported to your doctor immediately.

Signs of Increased Blood Sugar

In rare cases, Pantoprazole may cause an unsafe increase in blood sugar, a condition characterized by extreme thirst, increased urination and mental confusion. Report these signs to your doctor immediately.

Signs of an Infection

Some side effects of Pantoprazole are similar to those of common infections such as the flu or a cold. Be sure to tell your doctor if you experience fever, chills or a sore throat while taking Pantoprazole, because it could indicate a potential complication that needs treatment.

Other Serious Side Effects

Other side effects of Pantoprazole that may indicate a potentially serious complication include dark urine, jaundice, chest pain, an irregular or fast heartbeat, red, blistered or peeling skin, and unusual bleeding or bruising. If you experience any of these side effects while taking Pantoprazole, notify your doctor immediately.
