Oils To Promote Hair Growth

Since ancient times, men and women all over the world have used a variety of oils to stimulate their hair growth and beautify their hair. Most of these oils come from plants, while some are animal-based. Science continues to research these hair growth claims. Mehmet Oz, M.D., says "As far as supplements go . . . the oil in avocados may slow hair loss and promote hair growth by preventing follicle-killing DHT (dihydrotestosterone) from binding to receptor sites at the hair follicles. These supplements are controversial, however, and there are few studies that show their effectiveness."

Promote healthy hair growth with oils as was done in ancient times.

History

People thousands of years ago believed that hair growth responds to certain oils. For example, the ancient Egyptians used castor oil to stimulate hair growth, usually mixing it with another oil, such as almond oil. In India, amla oil and coconut oil were used, according to Ayurvedic tradition, an Indian healing method that's 4,000 years old. The ancient Africans used olive oil, while rosemary oil was applied during Victorian times. These same oils are in use today to promote hair growth.

Rosemary & Castor

Rosemary oil is used to stimulate your hair follicles, encouraging hair growth. Massage your scalp with rosemary oil to prevent hair loss, strengthen your hair and prevent premature graying of your hair.

Besides ancient Egypt, Greek travelers such as Herodotus used castor seed oil for improving hair growth and texture. Today, a variety of hair products contain castor oil as a key ingredient, although science is still researching the use of castor oil to increase hair growth.

Amla & Coconut

Amla oil comes from dried amla berries, also called Indian Gooseberries, and is used in Ayurvedic medicine in India. Amla oil looks almost like linseed oil, also called flaxseed oil. Amla oil helps prevent hair from graying prematurely, stimulates hair growth, prevents shedding and dandruff, and strengthens your hair. It also fights split ends.

Coconut oil is a natural antioxidant used mainly in India for the skin and hair. Like amla oil, coconut oil is used in various Ayurvedic remedies. Massage coconut oil directly on your scalp before bedtime, to prevent hair loss and premature hair graying.

Purchasing

Find hair products containing amla oil in Indian grocery stores and Asian markets, or online. Locate castor oil in drugstores, grocery stores, natural health-food stores and online. Castor oil usually is sold as a laxative. Buy organic, virgin coconut oil and rosemary essential oil in most natural health-food stores and online. Rosemary essential oil is oil extracted directly from the rosemary plant.

Tips & Warnings

Inform your doctor before using these oils on your hair to promote growth. Amla, coconut, rosemary castor and other such oils have medicinal properties that could interact with a prescribed treatment or an existing condition.

Do not use these oils if you're pregnant, until your doctor gives you permission.
