Function
Chin implants are used to reshape the face to achieve a desired look or silhouette. They are placed under the skin and/or muscles of the face.
Solid Synthetic Implants
Two materials are commonly used for solid artificial facial implants. Silicone and polytetrafluoroethylene --- known as ePTFE --- are placed against and attached to the underlying bone structure in the face.
Natural Tissue Implants
Tissue range from a variety of sources and materials, including cadaverous tissue, bone grafts, tissue grafts (not including fat) and fat. These materials can come from the patient undergoing facial augmentation or from other individuals.
Injectable Implantable Materials
There are numerous synthetic injectable implantable materials used to reshape the face. These differ significantly from solid implants in terms of components and are also generally temporary, lasting from 1 month to 10 years.
Warning
There are several possible side effects associated with chin implants, ranging from infection to the implants shifting under the skin to a complete loss of feeling in the affected area.
