Topamax Dangerous Side Effects

Topamax is a brand name for the generic drug topiramate. Topiramate is a prescription drug used to prevent seizures in people with epilepsy and other disorders. The drug is also used to prevent migraines. Unfortunately, Topamax can have some severe side effects, especially when taken by children.

Blindness

Topamax can cause glaucoma and vision changes. Without treatment, eye problems caused by Topamax can lead to permanent blindness.

Suicidal Tendencies

According to the FDA approved Topamax patient information pamphlet, although it occurs only in 1 out of 500 people, Topamax can cause suicidal thoughts and actions.

Fever

Topamax causes some people to sweat less, which results in high body temperatures and fevers. This is especially likely to occur in children.

For Women

The effectiveness of birth control pills may be decreased in women taking Topamax. It is not known whether Topamax affects babies in the womb or is excreted in breast milk.

Kidney Stones

It is important to drink a lot of water when taking Topamax to avoid the possibility of kidney stones.
