The Effects Of Cedar Oil

Cedar oil is often used by aromatherapists.

Distilling the wood from certain varieties of cedars, junipers and cypresses produces cedar oil. This essential oil, which is also called cedarwood oil, has a long and storied history. The ancient Egyptians respected the numerous beneficial effects of cedar oil, using it during the embalming process. Today, we use it for aromatherapy and other household uses.

Insect Repelling Effects

Cedar oil naturally repels moths, fleas and certain other types of insects. Many pest control products include this oil as an active ingredient. Additionally, cedarwood oil is the reason cedar furniture is insect-resistant. The Environmental Protection Agency recognizes cedar oil as being relatively safe as an insect repellent. The factsheet on cedar oil states, "There is negligible human and environmental exposure to cedarwood oil as a result of its registered pesticidal uses."

Antiseptic Effects

The Egyptians first noted that cedar oil had antiseptic properties. Because of this, they used this oil in the embalming process. Cedar oil is an antifungal treatment, and according to the Aromatherapy Massage website, it is especially effective in protecting wounds from tetanus germs. These effects are the reason cedar oil is often an ingredient in herbal antiseptic ointments.

Healing Effects

Herbalists use cedar oil to treat many different ailments. The School of Forest Resources and Conservation notes the many healing effects of cedar oil by herbalists that include arthritis relief, treatment for rheumatism, and use as a natural remedy for bronchitis, asthma and colds. The Food and Drug Administration considers cedar oil as "generally recognized as safe" for use as a food additive.

Calming Effects

Aromatherapists recognize the calming effects of cedar oil on the mind and body. Using this oil in an oil diffuser, or otherwise introducing the scent into your home, may help reduce stress. Massage therapists use cedar oil in certain massage techniques. This helps their clients further relax and let go of tensions during the massage.
