Care For Someone With Dementia

Dementia is part of the aging process known as atrophy (in which brain tissue shrinks in size) and can be caused by damage or destroyed brain cells called neurons. Since it is a progressive disease, there are several stages of dementia. The early stage is characterized by forgetfulness and confusion. In second stage dementia the person will require more and more assistance becoming more dependent on the caretaker. The person will have problems recognizing friends and family. In late stage dementia the person will have severe problems with memory, judgement and other skills. Here are some suggestions for the care of a dementia patient.

Instructions

1. Take the person suffering from dementia to the doctor for regular checkups. Bring a diary or log book to the exam room to write down all your concerns, and speak with the doctor about following and managing the condition.

2. People who suffer from dementia will usually exhibit memory loss, mood changes and difficulty falling asleep. There are certain prescription medications that are useful in helping to control these symptoms.

3. Do things together with the dementia patient, for example, walking or hiking, swimming, going to art shows and concerts. Regular exercising and engaging in active sports and activities will help to slow down the progression. Being around friends, family and children can also be helpful to someone suffering from dementia.

4. Eat meals together. Serve healthy and nutritious foods including plenty of fruits and vegetables. Watch what they eat to see if there are any changes in eating habits. Tell the doctor if you have concerns.

5. Help the dementia patient with bathing and grooming.
