Identify Purslane Weed In A Lawn







You may not know the name of this weed, but there's a good chance your lawn has it. Purslane is a summer annual weed that is common throughout the world. But to eliminate a weed from the lawn, you first have to identify the culprit. Here's a mug shot of this convicted lawn intruder.


Instructions


1. Determine that the plant is a weed. A weed is considered to be any undesirable plant in your lawn or garden. Purslane is a hot weather annual broadleaf weed that restricts growth of desirable turf grass. Purslane is a weed.


2. Check the plant's location. Purslane thrives in bare or thin spots in the lawn. Lawns that are not watered properly and regularly are susceptible.








3. Examine the leaves. Common purslane leaves are smooth, oval in shape and up to 1 1/4-inches long growing directly off the stem. They are thick, fleshy and could be compared to the leaves of a jade houseplant.


4. Note the weed's growth pattern and roots. Purslane is a low, matt-forming weed with reddish-brown, succulent stems that emerge from a thick taproot. The stems radiate from the center of the plant and can grow up to 12-inches long. Purslane grows rapidly in warm weather.
