What Is The Medicare Advantage Plan

In 2003, the Medicare Modernization Act replaced the Medicare + Choice program with Medicare Advantage (MA), or Medicare Part C. MA plans provide some additional benefits that are not covered under original Medicare.

Eligibility

You have to sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B before you can enroll in an MA plan. You must also live in a region covered by your specific MA plan's service area. People with end-stage renal disease are ineligible.

Types

The different types of Medicare plans include: Coordinated Care Plans (such as HMOs and PPOs), Fee for Service Plans, Medical Savings Accounts and All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly.

Considerations

Once you enroll in an MA plan, your Medigap policy no longer pays for any costs related to your original Medicare plan. You cannot enroll in MA at the same time as other plans that offer prescription drug coverage.

Coverage

MA plans provide coverage for services under Part A and Part B with the exception of hospice care. Many people choose MA plans because they provide comprehensive coverage at extremely low or no monthly premiums.

Additional Benefits

MA plans also provide coverage for additional services such as annual physical exams, acupuncture, eye care and emergencies outside the country.
