Water softeners are pieces of equipment that filter out the minerals and chemicals present in tap water that may make it hard, or unhealthy to drink. Using a water softener depends on what type it is. Water softeners typically fall into one of three different types of units -- a unit with a meter, a unit with a timer and a unit that operates manually. Each one is used a little differently.
Instructions
1. Use your faucet as normal (in the event you have a metered unit). Metered water softeners monitor how much water is being used as well as the hardness level of the water. It then operates automatically, softening water accordingly. The frequency at which water is softened will changed depending on how much water you use on a daily or weekly basis (depending on the unit).
2. Go to the water softener control unit and set the frequency at which water is softened (in the event of a timer unit). Typically, timed water softeners work on a specific schedule of either once every few days or once every few weeks, depending on your preferences. Once the timer is set (which can be done in the form of an LCD control screen or rotating knobs depending on the unit), you can use your faucets as normal, and water will be softened at the predetermined times.
3. Manually turn on your water softener and turn it off at the main control unit (for manual units). Manual water softeners require the most amount of work from the user. Pay attention to the quality of your water. If you notice that it is getting hard (as evidenced by either a foamy appearance or a brown-tinted color), turn on your water softener at the main control unit. Allow it to soften your water (how much and how long it does this depends on the unit) and turn it back off again until you need it in the future.
