Spray For Termites

Spray for Termites

Termites are dangerous and destructive. If they are discovered and left unchecked, they can cause serious damage to wood that will result in costly and extensive home repairs. If you discover that you have termites, you should take immediate steps to eliminate the problem through an effective method such as spraying.

Instructions

1. Confirm that you actually do have termites. You may have noticed signs that termites may be present in your home, such as damage to moldings and door frames or mud tubes on the walls. However, there are other insects that can cause damage that mimic a termite problem. Contact a professional pest control company to conduct an inspection for confirmation. Most companies will perform this inspection for free, hoping that you will use their services.

2. Choose the type of liquid treatment that you will use to spray for termites. The website killthetermites.com recommends using Termidor or a similar chemical. Termidor contains the chemical fipronil, which is safer for the environment than many other pesticides. It only requires a few ounces for the treatment, and it kills the termites rather than just repelling them.

3. Remove other family members and pets from the area to be treated. Termite-killing products are toxic to humans and animals, too, so you should keep the rest of the family, especially children, away from the spray. Confine household pets so they are out of the danger zone.

4. Take precautions to protect yourself. You will be handling a toxic chemical, so you should wear clothing that covers as much skin as possible. Wear protective gloves, use goggles to keep the chemical out of your eyes, and wear a mask over your nose and mouth to prevent inhalation.

5. Apply the termite spray to the affected areas. Termite control chemicals typically need to be diluted, so follow the directions given by the manufacturer for the particular spray that you choose to use. The best method for spray application is to use a pressure sprayer. Pest control professionals use 100-gallon sprayers, and a termite treatment usually requires 100 to 200 gallons of diluted spray. If you have a smaller sprayer, be prepared to do many refills. You will use the spray to create a protective barrier around the structure.

Tips Warnings

Once your have sprayed for termites, you should put a prevention plan into place. Termidor recommends getting a service plan from a professional pest control company. If you don't wish to do that, Termidor recommends taking preventative measures such as storing mulch and wood away from the base of your house, keeping bushes and shrubs trimmed away from your house, removing infested trees and stumps, eliminating moisture sources and covering the soil underneath your house with plastic.

Termites can cause serious damage to your home. If you are not sure that you can do a good job spraying, it may be better to hire a professional to do the job. Most pest control companies will guarantee their work so you can be sure the pests are eliminated.
