Homemade Stinkbug Control

Stinkbugs not only are annoying because of their odor, they are also destructive to many vegetable plants, and they cause allergic reactions in some people. They especially favor tomato plants but also severely damage other leafy vegetable plants like cabbage. You don't want them in your house, and you definitely do not want to step on one. The odor is pungent and lasting.

Chemical bug sprays are definitely effective on stinkbugs. However these sprays leave residues on vegetables and harm the environment; natural means are more desirable. There are ways to get rid of stinkbugs without using chemicals.

Smelly Bugs Don't Like Smelly Plants

Stinkbugs do not like the smell of marigolds or chrysanthemums, or the herbs thyme, lavender and mint. Surround your vegetables with these plants, and the stinkbugs will not come. Even before they bloom, marigolds are effective. Have you ever seen a stinkbug on a marigold plant?

But They Do Like Yellow

While stinkbugs will avoid an area planted with marigolds or chrysanthemums, they will be attracted to other varieties of yellow flowers. Sunflowers, millet, and buckwheat are good plants for attracting stinkbugs. Use these plants to lure the stinkbugs away from your garden and concentrate them in a specific area where you can deal with them using non-chemical homemade treatments.

No Smoking

One of the most effective of these treatments is a spray made from cigarettes. Shred a pack of cigarettes into a gallon of warm water, and let it stand for half an hour. Strain the solution, and add a tablespoon of dish washing detergent. This solution will keep for some time in a sealed container. When ready to use, just put it into a sprayer or spray bottle and spray. Consider wearing a bandanna when applying the solution because some stinkbugs will survive long enough to emit their odor.

Good Odor Versus Bad Odor

Lavender oil makes a nice-smelling spray that will kill stinkbugs. Mix a solution of 1/2 lavender oil and 1/2 water, and spray directly on the plants and bugs. This solution will not harm your plants but will kill stinkbugs. Use a simple spray bottle for this method because it will clog a garden sprayer. Wash the spray nozzle well with hot soapy water after using this spray.

Disinfect

Ordinary disinfectant--the kind you use in your bathroom--is a killer for stinkbugs as well as ants and many other garden pests. The problem with its use is that it can also burn the leaves of your vegetable plants, so be careful.

They're in the House

The same remedies that work in the garden work in the house. Furthermore, you can make your house an uninviting place by making tea from catnip leaves and spraying it liberally in areas where you have seen stinkbug entry. It might make your cat a little crazy, but it will definitely repel stinkbugs.
