Crafts With Chalk Seashells And Paper Plates

Make something from something else.

The brightest craft ideas usually come from the simplest items. There is plenty to do and many lessons to learn using chalk, seashells and paper plates. These are three of the most commonly used craft materials, along with pipe cleaner, Popsicle sticks, rocks, old coffee cans, twigs, beans, beads and egg cartons.

Chalk: Shadow Tracings

A little sun, a little shade and some chalk

Shadow tracing is an artsy-crafty experience that combines drawing skills with a lesson in learning how the sun casts shadows on the ground. All that is needed is a sunny day, a large sheet of paper or a clean slate sidewalk, and a cool place to stand. Shadows can be traced on the ground or on a sheet of paper (newsprint, paper used for shades, etc.) and the subject can change directions and use different colored chalk for different positions. If drawn on large paper, take it inside and finish it with glitter, water colors or crayons.

Seashells: By the Seashore, a Seashell Wreath

Seashells come in all shapes, sizes and colors

Take a Styrofoam wreath form, ribbon or muslin, florist twisting wire, a collection of rinsed and washed seashells and/or buttons and a hot glue gun. Make a romantic or cozy seashell wreath by wrapping the form and gluing on the shells, then adding some buttons here and there for a different effect. You can also make a wreath with seashells only. Use the florist's wire to make a loop for hanging the wreath.

Paper Plates: Sunflower Doors

Picnic lunch or arts and crafts supplies?

Use some brightly colored construction paper, paper plates, brown and black water-based paint, a paint brush, scissors, craft glue and Q-tips to make sunflowers that can be applied to a door. Other ideas for paper plate crafts are a cow door hanger, turtle mosaic, paper plate rainbow, pigs or bears, crowns and even tambourines. A little imagination, a good supply of paper plates and a few other art supplies go a long way.
