6 Ft. Privacy Fence
Good Evening, Can anyone give me an approximate cost to furnish all material and install a 150 feet, 6 ft. high, 5/8 thick dog-eared board fence? Thanks for any assistance, Jim jhhowell, Probably can't give you any sort of approximate figure that will mean anything. What do you want to use for posts for this fence? I use steel posts (1-5/8 or 1-7/8 chain link posts) because the cost about the same as a wood PT post does here and outlast the wood by 5 or 6 times. When i build a wood fence, I use PT rails. For the boards I NEVER use the thin 5/8 boards -- always use at least a 3/4 board, or a 5/4 when I can get them. And everything is put together with bolts and screws. Installed price to the customer depends on what the lumber is selling for at the time I give them a quote, and how much the guys are the crew are costing me. In the past 3 years it's run anywhere from $16/ft. to about $22/ft. Lumber and labor costs are going to be totally different where you're at because you have different species of wood available to you and your labor rates are totally different than mine. Hey, Lefty. How do you fasten the stringers to the metal posts when building a wood fence? I like your idea but am struggling with the attachments. dhamblet, Attaching the rails to the posts can be done one of two ways. Simpson makes brackets (PGT 1.5 and PGT 2)) that fit 1-7/8 and 2-3/8 posts respectively. The other method is to thru bolt the rail to the post. When I set the posts, I set them slightly less than 8' apart -- (7' 10 or so O.C.) and use 16' rails. The joints in the rails occur on the odd numbered posts for one rail and on the even numbered posts for the other. If you are using a 3rd rail, which you'll need if you use the thin fence boards, it doesn't matter which post the joint occurs on. Jim, You can stop by (don't call) HD, Lowes, hmmm 84 (I think they have a store over on the Southside somewhere), Kempsville Building Matl's, or any of a number of others and they will give you a material quote in 5-10 min. Labor depends on way too many things. Will the holes be dug by hand, rented auger, borrowed auger? btw...will it be pre-fab panels, or built on-site? How many gates? If you are doing it for someone, you'll need materials costs, rental equipment costs, helper costs, then how much is you time and sweat worth. If you are having it done, call 3-4 fencing companies and they can prob give you approximate pricing over the phone. First, I would like to thank everyone for their input. GUNGUY45, Yes, it will be a prefab 8 Ft. panel fence. That's why I was getting confused with the use of steel posts. I can definately go by HD, Lowes, etc. and get a quote. But then again, I wouldn't have the pleasure of reading all of the other suggestions. Although I was a project manager in heavy building construction, I don't know a thing about residential work. My Ball Park number was between $2K $2.5K. We'll see. Thanks a bunch for your help. Jim PS Kempsville Building Supply is long gone. They sold out to another company, but it didn't last very long...just a vacant building. That sucks...they were great company even 3-4 yrs ago. They carried and knew about many of the brands that lots of houses were built with when I lived in Hampton. Hey, I just called them. They're Stock building supply now, may have moved locations, but the guy said they still carry most of the stuff, and some of the old guys are still there. Prob get better service and pricing than the Big Box. Our Products jhhowell, Your call on using those pre-fabbed panels, but I won't use them!! Too much trouble getting the posts spaced EXACTLY for them to work as advertised. The only way I've found to do it is to build the fence one panel at a time, setting each post as you go. That may be fine for a homeowner who can spend 3 weeks of his vacation putting in 20 sections, but a contractor wants to install those 20 sections in about 2 days and get on to the next job. I recently installed a privacy fence much like you describe. I do have a tip for spacing the posts. I first string a line and measure 8' increments and drill for the posts. I then set the corner posts in concrete. But I wait to set the other posts as I go so they will be exactly 8'. If you set the intermediate posts first you will run into problems and end up moving most of them.
