Every year, the U.S. Postal Service hires thousands of seasonal and temporary employees for positions in the organization. Starting salaries for these casual temp employees vary greatly across the nation. Each post office location is responsible for filling positions for its area. They usually post openings in city newspapers as well as online. These temporary positions occasionally lead to permanent careers.
Job Classifications
The Postal Service categorizes temporary, seasonal and casual employees as Supplemental Work Force. This work force may be called upon to serve for two 89-day terms annually. During the holiday season, the peak period for the USPS, an extra 21 days of work may be made available to casual workers. Generally, seasonal, temporary and casual employees earn less than their Regular Work Force counterparts.
College Employment
Many college students take advantage of the Postal Service's summer employment opportunities. Current pay rates for summer employees are more than $11 an hour, as of 2010. If you're seeking a summer position, contact the local post office branch early in the year. These jobs are in very high demand.
Get a Seasonal Job
When the Postal Service is hiring, it will often post ads in newspapers as well as on its website. You may visit your local post office to inquire about job openings and complete an employment application. It's also possible to apply online through the USPS website (see Resources). If you're applying online, you will need to have a current e-mail address and create a career profile.
To be eligible for a postal job, you must be at least 18 years old or 16 with a valid diploma, be a citizen or legal resident, have basic English skills and submit to background and drug screenings. You will also be asked to submit an up-to-date resume, and eligible male applicants must be registered with the Selective Service System. Military veterans may be asked to provide additional forms to document their service.
