Qualifications For Aarp

Age restrictions to join AARP

AARP, which stands for American Association of Retired Persons, remains dedicated to improving the quality of life for older Americans. Founded in 1958 by Ethel P. Andrus, this nonprofit organization provides special products such as insurance products, health products, travel benefits and financial services. In order to join the association, some minor qualifications must apply.

Age Requirement

Initially, the organization required that prospective applicants be retired from work or military service. However, in 1999 the rules were changed to include any person over 50 years of age which makes their organization available to individuals who can prove they are the required age. Also, applicants can be based in other countries such as Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, U.S Virgin Islands and myriad other countries.

Application

In order to join, an application filled out online or mailed into the corporate division initiates the process. It requests basic information such as name, address, phone number and email. Membership includes your spouse or partner. Under current guidelines, your spouse receives another card to take advantage of AARP savings and discounts at selected areas.

Membership Fee

In order to provide the myriad incentives that AARP provides, a basic membership fee applies. You sign up for one-, three- or a five-year subscription. Once a person completes the transaction, membership becomes approved and gives instant access to products and services.
