Make a Wire Coat Hanger Cover
Good hangers are essential for keeping your clothes looking nice and lasting longer. Wire coat hangers create distortion in clothes, but special hangers with padded edges can be expensive. Inexpensively create your own hangers by making wire coat hanger covers. You can use a small amount of quilt batting and decorative fabric to make a one-of-a-kind cover for wire hangers you already own. Make these coat hanger covers for yourself and as thoughtful gifts for friends and family.
Instructions
1. Lay a sheet of newspaper on your work table. Center a wire hanger on the newspaper. Trace around the hanger shape. Trace only the body of the hanger; the neck and hook is not necessary. Cut out the newspaper pattern a 1/2 inch larger than the drawn shape.
2. Fold a 1/2 yard of fabric into two layers with the right sides together. Pin the paper hanger pattern to the fabric and cut out. Rearrange the pattern on the fabric. Pin and cut again for a total of four fabric pieces. Fold a 1/4 yard of high-loft quilt batting into two layers. Pin the pattern to the batting and cut out.
3. Measure down 1 inch from the top neck of the hanger shape. Cut off the peak from the fabric. Place the fabric pieces together in two sets with the right sides facing. Pin the slanted side edges together. Stitch the pinned edges of one set using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. This will be the outside of the hanger cover. Stitch the pinned edges of the other piece in the same way, leaving a 3 inch opening on one edge for turning. This will be the lining. Do not sew the flat peak top or the bottom edge.
4. Place the high-loft quilt batting shapes together and pin. Sew the pinned edges together using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Trim the seam to a 1/4 inch to eliminate bulk.
5. Turn the outside of the hanger cover right side out. Slip it into the lining. Slip the sewn quilt batting into the outside hanger cover. Match the side seams and the top and bottom edges of the hanger cover and pin. Pin the bottom edges and the top edges of the three layers together. Sew completely around the top edge and the bottom edge of the hanger cover.
6. Turn the cover right side out through the opening in the lining. Hand sew the opening closed. Press the hanger cover. Slip the cover over the hook of the wire hanger and fit it over the frame.
7. Cut an 18 inch length of 1/4 inch wide ribbon. Tie the ribbon into a bow. Hand stitch the ribbon to the neck of the hanger cover.
