Rubbermaid Closet Installation Instructions
Closet space is at a premium in many homes, especially older ones. Closet organizers can help you make the most of whatever space you have available. Rubbermaid closet kits allow you to modify the system to suit your needs, as well as change out components as your needs change. The Rubbermaid closet installation process is simple, even for an inexperienced do-it-yourselfer. All you need are a few basic tools.
Instructions
1. Measure the length, height and depth of your closet. Determine if you are going to install the Rubbermaid closet rails on just the back walls of the closet or if you have enough depth to utilize the side walls as well.
2. Use a stud finder to locate the studs on the back wall of the closet. They are usually 16 inches apart. If you are hanging closet organizers from the side walls, mark the stud locations there as well.
3. Mark the stud locations with a pencil at a point that is 86 1/2 inches above the floor. Use a carpenter's level to verify that the marks are level. Draw a horizontal line connecting the marks.
4. Hold the hang rail against the closet wall using the line as your guide. Wherever the hole in the hang rail corresponds with a stud, drill 1/8-inch pilot holes using the appropriate holes on the hang rail as your guide.
5. Drill a hole for a drywall anchor screw if the closet wall doesn't have studs within 4 inches of the corner. Skip this step if it does.
6. Secure two screws into the hang rail on the left side of it. Slide a second hang rail behind the first one if the closet needs a longer one. Match holes in the hang rails where they overlap. Determine where the stud is on the right side of the hang rail. If there isn't one within 4 inches of the end, insert a drywall anchor. Attach the hang rails to the wall using the pilot holes.
7. Slip the upright rails over the hang rails on both the right and left sides. Set the rails so they are 2 inches away from the closet wall. Mark the position of the lowest hole in the upright. If this isn't over a stud, insert an anchor. Secure each rail with screws.
8. Measure 22 inches from the left vertical rail. Attach a third upright rail in that position. Repeat until all the uprights are in position.
9. Cover the hang rail with its plastic cover. If necessary, cut it to fit with a pair of scissors.
10. Position brackets and shelving as you desire in the closet. You cannot use the top two slots on the upright rails because the brackets do not fit. Do not use the two lowest slots either because of weight issues. Once the brackets and shelving are in position, slide the lock into place to keep the shelving from moving. You should hear a snap when the lock is in position.
11. Attach clothes rod brackets underneath shelving. Slide the clothes rod into position on the bracket. Put an end cap on both ends of the rod. Snap the clothes rod into its bracket once you have it in position.
