What Are The Disadvantages Of A Midwife

Do the disadvantages of a midwife outweigh the advantages?

Choosing the person who will deliver your baby is an important decision, and knowing all of the facts before you commit can help you feel more comfortable. Here are some important things to consider about midwifery before you make any decisions.

A Midwife Might Refer You to a Doctor Later On

Choosing a midwife can be a tedious process because you want to check all credentials and make sure the person has sufficient experience and knowledge. After you select the midwife and spend months creating a strong bond, the midwife could decide not to deliver your baby for safety reasons and refer you to an obstetrician. According to an article published in the Vancouver Sun in February 2008, 25 percent of the people who initially choose a midwife end up delivering with the help of a medical doctor or obstetrician. This makes the hours spent trying to find the perfect midwife wasted time.

Insurance Problems

The cost of giving birth is more than most people can afford out of pocket. That is why having health insurance can be a huge advantage. However, some insurance companies cover the costs only if you choose to go to an obstetrician in a hospital setting. They will not cover the costs associated with using a midwife, which can mean a hefty bill for new parents. For example, a licensed midwife in California, Barbara E. Herrera, charges $3,400 for a home birth, but an HMO will not cover any of that $3,400.

Differences of Opinion Can Cause Rifts

The Gentle Beginnings website says that some family members might have trouble accepting the decision to use a midwife instead of a medical doctor. According to Katie Allison Granju, author of Midwives Under Fire, this dissatisfaction likely stems from groups like the American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists decrying midwifery as unsafe. Ultimately, choosing a midwife is a decision to be made by the parents, but these parents might find themselves constantly defending their position to friends and family members. This can cause added stress during an already stressful time.
