Party Food Ideas From The 1960s

The 1960s brought an entirely new era of culture; clothing, music and art transformed the world into a peace-loving population that sought out new and interesting things, including in the kitchen. Inspired by French, Japanese and other foreign cultures, food in the 1960s was anything but simple. Choose dishes that appropriately represent the era if you're hosting a '60s-themed party.

Fondue

Fondue was one of the biggest food crazes of the 1960s and is a perfect addition to a '60s-inspired party. The traditional fondue is a Swiss dip made with Gruyere and Emmentaler cheese, garlic, white wine, lemon juice, corn starch and nutmeg and pepper. An alternative chocolate fondue includes heavy cream, bittersweet or semisweet chocolate and your choice of Cognac, liqueur or brandy. Serve your fondue in a traditional fondue pot or a regular cooking pot if the former is not available. Serve cheese fondue with a variety of breads, and chocolate fondue with strawberries, bananas, cake or marshmallows.

Picnic Salads

Picnic-inspired salads go hand-in-hand with foods that defined the 1960s. Picnic salads included dishes like macaroni salad, potato salad and Oriental noodle salad that were served cold at outdoor barbecues and pool parties. A traditional macaroni salad includes mayonnaise, olive, capers and pimentos; a potato salad includes mayonnaise, mustard, hard boiled eggs and pickles; an Oriental noodle salad includes Chinese noodles, red peppers and a dressing mixture of rice wine vinegar, sesame oil and soy sauce.

Macaroni and Cheese

Macaroni and cheese was very popular during the 1960s particulary with the increased production of frozen meals. In addition to frozen macaroni and cheese, a popular twist on the dish was a beef and macaroni casserol consisting of macaroni, hamburger, tomato soup or sauce and shredded cheese baked with seasonings. Serve your own version of homemade macaroni and cheese or beef and macaroni for a warm and comforting side dish.

Swedish Meatballs

Swedish meatballs have origins in 1750's Sweden but the dish was extremely popular during the 1960s to serve at parties and on buffets. Swedish meatballs are made using ground beef and pork, bread crumbs, onions and a number of spices. The meatballs are served with a sauce consisting of flour, cream and seasonings and then garnished with parsley. Keep your Swedish meatballs warm by serving them in a crockpot.

Chocolate-Cherry Delight Cake

Devil's food cake, pudding and Maraschino cherries were very popular during the 1960s. A perfect party dessert incorporates all of these ingredients. The Bomb Shelter Chocolate Cherry Delight Cake is made using Devil's food cake, cherry pie filling, chocolate pudding mix, cocoa powder, whipped topping and Maraschino cherries. Mix together the pie filling, pudding mix and cocoa together then add the whipped topping and spread it on the middle and top layer of the devil's food cake which was baked using two round pans. Garnish the cake with Maraschino cherries.
