Adding personal touches can make a store-bought entertainment center look like a custom piece.
An entertainment center is designed to hold DVD and CD players, along with the television and audio system. Some entertainment centers have solid cabinet doors, which make it hard to see the components inside. This problem is easily remedied by replacing the inner door panels with glass or plexiglass. With a few tools and some DIY skills you can redesign the doors to create a more attractive and accessible entertainment center.
Instructions
1. Take off the doors from the entertainment center by removing the screws in the door on the hinges.
2. Set the doors on a workbench face-down and clamp them to the bench with a scrap of wood between the doors and the clamp.
3. Determine if the panels in the doors are set in tongue and groove joints. If not, cut the inner square of the panel out of each door with a jigsaw and follow the inner panel's exact line.
4. Cut out the back of the frame's groove over the inner panel with a router. Set the router blade carefully to prevent cutting the front of the frame's groove.
5. Remove the inner panel to make space for the glass door frame. If it will not come out easily, use a utility knife to cut the glue that holds the panel in place.
6. Measure the height and width of each opening for a clear panel and have a pane of glass or sheet of plexiglass cut to size for each opening.
7. Insert a pea-sized bead of silicone into the corner of the groove around the entire door panel frame.
8. Press the piece of glass or plexiglass into the silicone until the caulk spreads around the edge of the pane. Hold it there for 60 seconds.
9. Place four plastic frame clips on the vertical edges of each clear pane and two on the horizontal edges. Screw the plastic clips into the wood frame with 1/2-inch wood screws and a cordless drill.
