Get More Power To My Main Speakers By Running The Receiver Only

Shut off all other audio on the receiver to boost the power to the main speakers.

An audio-video receiver for home theater typically has seven to nine terminals for speaker connections, plus a dedicated jack for a sub-woofer. When the component is set for playback of surround sound audio, such as is encoded on a DVD or Blu-ray disc, the receiver's total available power is distributed among the connected speakers. By switching the setting on a receiver to turn off surround sound, as well as any extra pairs of stereo speakers, you can direct more power to the main speakers for listening to stereo music.

Instructions

1. Turn off the power to all other components connected to your system except the audio source, such as a CD player, for playback on the main speakers.

2. Press the Power button to turn on the receiver.

3. Press the SURR or Surround button on the receiver's front panel or remote control to switch off the surround sound speakers, typically a center channel as well as rear and side speakers.

4. Push the Speaker B or Speakers 2 button on the receiver, which may be labeled differently depending on your model. This shuts off the second pair of stereo speakers if an extra pair is connected. Now only the main speakers will receive power from the receiver during playback of an audio source.

Tips Warnings

Powered sub-woofers can still be used without drawing on the receiver, since these subs have their own built-in amplifiers.

Surround sound utilizes the two main speakers, a center channel and two to four surround-sound speakers. Many receivers are also equipped with terminals for an extra pair of stereo speakers, known as the B or 2 system. In total, a receiver could have seven to nine speaker connections, plus the sub-woofer.
