Paint Clogs

Wooden clogs can be painted with any colors you like.

Wooden clogs, a type of shoe most associated with Holland, have been popular there since the 14th century. While many outlets in Holland and elsewhere sell finished clogs, decorating them yourself can be an entertaining craft project and also provide you with a unique pair of shoes. According to the Wooden Shoe Factory of Amsterdam, traditional clogs are painted yellow with a red pattern, but you can paint them with whatever colors or designs you wish.

Instructions

Painting Wooden Clogs

1. Place your wooden clogs on a steady surface covered in newspaper or other protective material and paint the entire clog using craft paints. You can use one or more base colors such as solid red or black and white stripes. Leave to dry according to the paint manufacturer's instructions. Keep the base colors relatively simple if you intend to apply a complicated design on top.

2. Draw your chosen design on top using a pencil, once the base coat is entirely dry. This can be done freehand, using a stencil or if you want a particularly complicated picture, but don't feel confident in your own drawing skills, by using tracing paper. To do this, trace the desired image onto the tracing paper using a pencil. Then place the tracing paper drawing-side down onto the clog and rub over the design from the other side with the pencil.

3. Paint along the pencil lines, using fine paint brushes and craft paint, and leave to dry, according to your paint manufacturer's instructions. After these lines have dried, you can paint in the rest of the design using whichever colors you wish. Again leave to dry, according to instructions.

4. Once the final paints have dried and you are happy you have completed your design, use a clean paint brush to cover the clog surface in clear wood varnish or wood sealant and leave to dry, according to manufacturer's instructions.
